Why Assimilate, When You Could Be Yourself?

To assimilate means to become comfortable with others costumes and to use them yourself. There's many people now a days trying to assimilate to things that are not them; many of them just want to fit in. In A Raisin In The Sun,  Beneatha herself worries that she may be an "assimilationist". In order for Beneatha to fit in she keeps "mutilating", as Asagai refers it, her hair. As we probably all know, Beneatha's hair is not the same way it was as when she was born so, she gets a straight perm just to fit in societies rules of a white woman. This play uses assimilation as a weakness because the characters are so in wrapped in a white community that they try to fit in as whites themselves. It's just like nowadays, people will do anything to fit in. They would even go hang out and start acting like people of other races or other color. I usually dont assimilate in to other races, dont ever act another race nor i try to be them. Eric Liu , however, never had intentions of becoming white on the inside, it just sort of happened. There were many event in his lifetime that managed to change him into a "banana".

  2. I loved how Eric Liu used the term "banana!" and you repeated it, therefore I love this blog. It's crazy how originality is so hard to find nowadays, isn't it?

  3. @Maria Totally Agree, You never know when someone migh be actually acting like themselves or they're just acting like another person so they could fit in.
